There is some positive news for the Chicago Bears with David Montgomery’s injury update.

Chicago Bears fans can take a deep breath. After being helped to the locker room on Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions with a knee injury, running back David Montgomery doesn’t appear to have a torn ACL.

Montgomery went down in pain during the fourth quarter after taking a hit to his left knee. The immediate concern was a torn ACL, which would have sidelined the running back for the rest of the season. Losing him would have been detrimental for Chicago. Montgomery had 106 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the NFC North rivalry game and has been an invaluable piece to Matt Nagy’s struggling offense.

Thankfully, it appears that the knee injury is likely not as serious as an ACL tear.

Bears don’t believe RB David Montgomery tore his ACL, but they are doing further testing today to determine the extent of the injury, per source.

No injury news is good news, but a torn or sprained MCL would have a 6-8 week return timetable as opposed to almost a year for the ACL.

In the meantime, Montgomery’s role will be filled by Damien Williams. Khalil Herbert is listed third on the depth chart for Chicago, so he will see a few carries in Montgomery’s absence. This will just be another question mark for Nagy to navigate for his offense.

Looking ahead, a Week 12 return would put Montgomery back in the game right where he left off as the Bears face the Lions in Detroit for their second meeting of the season.
