More details about Aaron Rodgers-49ers trade talks revealed

Aaron Rodgers reportedly tried to get himself traded to the San Francisco 49ers during the offseason.

The Aaron Rodgers trade drama dominated the landscape of the NFL offseason with reports constantly circulating about whether the future Hall-of-Famer would ever play another down for the Green Bay Packers.

The situation has since been resolved with Rodgers playing this year for Green Bay but NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport is reporting that the San Francisco 49ers were Rodgers’ preferred destination in the offseason.

The 49ers and Packers did have some discussions about Rodgers, according to Rapoport’s report, with head coaches Kyle Shanahan and Matt LaFleur having active discussions about a potential deal when San Francisco received word that Rodgers wanted to go to the Bay Area.

Those talks quickly fizzled out as the Packers shut down any interest in moving Rodgers, leaving the 49ers to pivot to Trey Lance in the draft instead.

What does this mean for Aaron Rodgers’ future?

At this point, Rodgers is basically on a year-to-year status with the Packers, who renegotiated his contract during the offseason to give them an out after the 2021 campaign. Rodgers will essentially control where he plays next season and he has shown that money isn’t going to be the driving factor in his decision.

While this storyline does add some intrigue to the Packers’ Sunday night matchup against the 49ers in Week 3, the chances of a union this offseason aren’t as likely with the 49ers’ decision to draft Lance. Expect Rodgers to look towards destinations where he can win immediately, with a potential preference for playing on the West Coast since he is a California native.

Teams to watch could include a pair of AFC West rivals, the Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders, who have decent quarterback situations right now with the potential for a massive short-term upgrade in Rodgers. San Francisco could always jump back into the mix if they aren’t encouraged by Lance’s progress and knowing that Rodgers would prefer to play there if given the choice.
