THE WITCHER DELETED SCENE – VILGEFORTZ AND STREGOBOR

Originally, NetflixGeeked unveiled a handful of deleted scenes during their “The Witcher Season 2, The Witcher: Unlocked” event. In this particular scene, we learn that the enigmatic Vilgefortz may have a darker history than we’ve seen so far.

Through a highly judgemental tone, Stregobor notes that Vilgefortz was “Born of a prostitute, abandoned in a sewer, [his] magic shaped by the ignorant druids who picked [him] up.” With this, he reveals that Vilgefortz never attended a school like Ban Ard nor received any formal magical education.

Then, Stregobor questions Vilgefortz’s ability to lead. He notes that Vilgefortz “clearly doesn’t respect [The Brotherhood’s] code of ethics.” It’s debatable whether Stregobor has such a code, but the implication is clear: Vilgefortz is an outsider, which supposedly threatens the other mages.

Further, after more virtriol against Yennefer, Stregobor ends on a peculiar line: “What about [Yennefer’s] rage, her tempestuousness? Then again, you understand those all too well, don’t you?” He suggests that there’s an angrier and more chaotic side to Vilgefortz like Yennefer, one that he believes could threaten The Brotherhood.

In truth, it’s a roundabout way of questioning Vilgefortz’s loyalty. Without the pre-existing connection to Ban Ard – and thus, The Brotherhood – Vilgefortz owes little to nothing to them. The scene doubts Vilgefortz’s motivations, hinting that we may yet see his true intentions.

Though he’s had his questionable moments, the show has largely depicted Vilgefortz to be fairly noble. He fought at Sodden, and uses his battle-hardened strategic mind to aid Tissaia’s takeover. Compared to the ruthless and cruel Stregobor, it seems the series wants its viewers to root for Vilgefortz. However, this Witcher deleted scene shows that even the best mages have their secrets.
