The Green Bay Packers are finalizing a deal with former Dallas Cowboys linebacker Jaylon Smith, per various reports.

Smith was surprisingly released by the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday night, in part because the two sides disagreed on his potential value in terms of a new contract.

The Notre Dame product has disappointed the last two seasons after making the Pro Bowl in 2019. Yet, even the Cowboys own official website dictated that Smith had made strides this season. Apparently, it wasn’t enough:

“Smith has certainly taken his game up a notch this season. He is displaying more effort running to the ball on the field, and he has become a more disruptive force against the run and pass. The veteran’s improved performance has played a role in the defense’s ability to hold its own in some battles against top offenses (see Chargers and Buccaneers).”

Packers rumors: Green Bay close to signing Jaylon Smith

Packers linebacker De’Vondre Campbell has impressed thus far in Green Bay. Odds are, he will not be replaced by Smith. The former Cowboy could slide alongside Campbell to form a solid 1-2 punch at the linebacker level.

Krys Barnes is listed as the usual starter next to Campbell, but missed the team’s last game against the Steelers due to a concussion sustained against the San Francisco 49ers. Clearly, the Packers would rather have more depth at that position.
