Packers fans should be furious with Matt LaFleur, not Mason Crosby

Matt LaFleur’s late decision-making for the Packers should have fans in Green Bay mad at their head coach, not kicker Mason Crosby.

The Packers have one season to convince their future Hall of Fame quarterback it’s worth sticking around in Green Bay. Matt LaFleur isn’t acting like it.

The end-of-game decisions from LaFleur were head-scratching as the Packers sought a narrow victory over the lowly Bengals.

LaFleur is just lucky Cincinnati insisted on losing.

Mason Crosby wasn’t good, but Matt LaFleur was even worse in Week 5

The final two minutes of regulation were a study in horrible kicking.

Mason Crosby missed a kick from 36 yards out to potentially put the Packers up by three. The Bengals came back and missed a go-ahead kick of their own with 26 seconds remaining. After Aaron Rodgers hit DeVonte Adams for 20 yards to set up another game-winning attempt, Crosby missed that one from 51 yards as well.

What happened in overtime should really grind the gears of Green Bay fans.

On the first play of extra time, Joe Burrow threw an interception, setting the Packers up at the Cincinnati 17 yard line.

Instead of sending his offense out there with the intent to win the game, LaFleur called two straight runs up the middle and then opted to kick a 40-yard field goal on third down.

It would be one thing if the field goal were a chip shot. It wasn’t. It would be another if Crosby had been money all game. He absolutely had not been.

Part of a coach’s job is to have a sense of where his players’ heads are at. Crosby was clearly struggling. Trotting him out there with that kind of confidence, not even attempting to create a shorter field or get a touchdown to win was utter madness.

Naturally, Crosby missed.

The only thing that saved Green Bay was Evan McPherson’s equally terrible day. He missed his next game-winning attempt from 49 yards to give the Packers new life.

When he got the chance again, Crosby hit to win the game, bailing out his head coach from a whole lot of valid questions.

How much does Matt LaFleur make?

The Packers aren’t going to fire Matt LaFleur anytime soon, but that won’t stop fans from wondering just exactly how much he’s burning a hole in the ledger to make questionable late-game decisions.

LaFleur is in the third year of a four-year contract he signed with the Packers back in 2019. There’s an option for the fifth year of his deal, and he’s making roughly $5 million per year.
