The Moon at a Glance: Arnold & Son Luna Magna Watch

The Luna Magna watch by Arnold & Son is one of the stealthier releases at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2021. This breathtaking product features an off-centred, white lacquered dial for the hour and the minute at the top of the aventurine glass dial, and an extremely large, three-dimensional moon phase indicator at 6 o’clock.

Is it the first wristwatch with a three-dimensional moon? No, it is not. But this one is BIG as the name Luna Magna implies. In fact, it measures a whopping 12 mm in diameter – the biggest we can think of. For some context, this feature is as wide as many watches are thick, and this has some bearing on how thick this watch is.

One half of this sphere is made of aventurine glass, same as the dial itself, to represent the dark side of the moon. The other half is made of marble as it symbolises the illuminated part.

The moon phase indicator is set by the crown and precisely so, thanks to a dedicated scale on the back of the movement. You would be correct to assume that the moon phase is an astronomical one, boasting the precision of a one-day deviation in 122 years. And as it weighs only 2.2 grams, it does not require a lot of power to move.

That is why Arnold & Son can claim a 90-hour power reserve on the hand-winding Calibre A&S1021. The watch measures 44 mm in diameter and 15.90 mm in thickness, already including the domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides.

We expect the watch to be highly wearable though due to the downward curvature of the lugs. This Arnold & Son Luna Magna in red gold is marketed as a limited edition of 28 pieces. The manufacture did not indicate the possibility of future variations, but those are to be expected.
