Russia kills 5 ‘Ukrainian saboteurs’ allegedly trying to breach border: report

Russian military officials said on Monday that five “saboteurs” from Ukraine who tried to breach Russia’s border had been killed.

The officials claimed troops and border guards intercepted the “diversionary reconnaissance” group as they tried to breach the border, Russian news agencies reported.

The Russians said Ukrainian armed vehicles had also been destroyed, the agencies added.

Ukraine denied the claims and said no Ukrainian forces were in Russia’s Rostov region at the time the incident was alleged to have occurred.

The reported incident took place as fears continue to grow that a Russian invasion of Ukraine is imminent.

Russia continues to deny it has plans to attack — even though it has massed an estimated 150,000 troops on three sides of Ukraine in recent weeks.

Ukraine and Western officials have warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin is now just looking for an excuse to invade.

According to Ukraine officials, there were no troops in the region where Russian soldiers say the attempt happened. Shelling incidents have spiked in recent days along the front that separates Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed rebels in eastern Ukraine.

With the prospect of war looming, French President Emmanuel Macron scrambled to broker a meeting between President Biden and Putin.

But the Kremlin on Monday said there were no concrete plans for a summit over Ukraine with Biden.
