Indian documentary Writing With Fire makes it to the final Oscar nominations

Writing With Fire, an Indian documentary feature has successfully made it to the final nominations for the 94th edition of the Academy Awards. Tracee Ellis Ross and Leslie Jordan announced the final nominations on Tuesday evening.

The documentary depicts the rise of the only newspaper run by Dalit women, Khabar Lahariya. The film shows a group of ambitious Dalit women, led by the chief reporter Meera, who switch from print to digital, as per the recent trend of increasing digital journalism.

The pack of courageous women uses smartphones to cover the incompetence of the local police force and to uncover the discrimination and violence carried out on the basis of gender and caste and to support the victims of the same. Campion, who was nominated for 1993’s The Piano, became the first woman ever to be nominated twice for the best director category. Chloé Zhao became just the second woman to ever win the award last year. Ari Wegner, also became the second woman ever to be nominated for best cinematography. The only previous woman to do so was Rachel Morrison for Mudbound in 2018. The ceremony will be telecasted on March 27.
